Cosmetic surgery requires a significant investment of both time and money. According to Dr. Steven Schmidt, plastic surgeon with Plastic Surgery & Skin Specialists by BayCare Clinic, being adequately prepared for your upcoming surgical procedure can often lead to shorter recovery times and optimal results.
In addition to specific pre- and post-surgical instructions outlined at your surgery consultation or pre-op appointment. Here are five ways to help you prepare.
- Maintain your physical health
- Arrange for support
- Prepare your home
- Eat a balanced diet
- Stop Smoking
Your physical health and cosmetic surgery
A person’s physical health is a huge component in a successful surgery, says Dr. Schmidt.
“The better a person’s health is, the easier their recovery will be and the better we can predict results,” he says. “Because of the elective nature of these procedures we can take the time to ensure a person is in good health, has maintained a stable weight, and has any conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes sufficiently under control before performing surgery.”
Anyone with undisclosed underlying health conditions is at a higher risk of complications, he adds.
Arranging for after care and support
Having adequate support on hand for the day of your surgery and for your recovery is important for the healing process.
While it differs for every procedure, you will likely need someone to drive you to and from your appointment and most likely stay with you at least the first night to help, says Dr. Schmidt.
“Having someone there to help you with basic needs like using the bathroom or cooking is beneficial to make sure the only thing you have to worry about is your recovery,” he adds. “A lot of people think they can manage on their own, but it’s our recommendation they have someone there to assist for sure the first day, but also throughout their recovery when necessary.”
After surgery, patients may experience side effects including swelling or bruising. They may need help with medications or traveling to follow up appointments.
Preparing your home for post-surgery
In addition to lining up support for yourself, patients should plan carefully for post-surgical needs in terms of their home.
You want to decide where you will spend your recovery- take into consideration stairs as well as access to a restroom when deciding.
Make sure your environment is clean, organized, and stress free. Stock the room with plenty of entertainment options like magazines, books or television as well as bottled water and healthy snacks. Preparing this space ahead of time will make coming home much easier.
Eating before surgery
Food is the usually the last thing most people are thinking about prior to plastic surgery. Eating a healthy, balanced diet in the weeks leading up to your procedure can support healing and stave off infection, says Dr. Schmidt.
“People should be focused on a well-balanced diet at all times, but it’s perhaps even more crucial when moving forward with surgery,” he says.
It’s also imperative that patients stay hydrated before and after surgery.
“Adequate hydration is important for tissue health as well as functions like digestion and circulation,” Dr. Schmidt says. “Staying hydrated can aid in a smooth recovery.”
Stop smoking
Tobacco use is the single biggest preventable risk factor for surgical complications, says Dr. Schmidt. Nicotine found in tobacco can decrease blood flow and oxygen in your blood and skin which can complicate the healing process or even cause infection.
“Of course, we recommend individuals quit smoking completely,” says Dr. Schmidt. “The overall health benefits of smoking cessation are endless, but even stopping tobacco use for the weeks leading up to your procedure can help with your recovery.”
Additionally, smoking is a leading cause of premature aging, wrinkles and can damage the collagen and elastin in our skin. So, depending on your procedure, quitting smoking may help maintain your results for longer as well.
Cosmetic surgery is an investment. Preparing for your procedure can help ensure your investment remains valuable.
