Advanced Wilderness Life Support training
Dr. Michael Medich, director for medical education at Aurora BayCare Medical Center, was interviewed by WBAY Channel 2 News for a story about a required course for future rural doctors.
The course, Advanced Wilderness Life Support, is specifically for medical students in the Wisconsin Academy of Rural Medicine program.
“They get great training for patients in high-resource facilities, like hospitals and clinics,” Medich said. “What they don’t get in traditional education is providing medical care in low-resource settings.”
The class, which features a series of hands-on sessions, provides students with items like canoe paddles, tarps, sleeping bags and ski poles for use in treating patients in the wilderness.
“This gets them in the mindset of taking care of patients with really low resources,” Medich said.
