A picture may be worth a thousand words, but in the days of Zoom calls and virtual meetings those pictures may also showcase a thousand flaws in the eyes of millions of people nationwide.
In 2020, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported an increased demand for cosmetic enhancements – both surgical and non-surgical.
The extra time spent looking at ourselves on camera may be partly responsible for the increased demand.
Patients come in with a variety of concerns, but many have complaints about extra wrinkles, dull appearing skin, tired looking eyes, lack of volume in their lips and just overall feelings of looking ‘old.’
Some of these patients may not have been bothered by these concerns before but seeing themselves on camera everyday has made things worse for them.
Data from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reflects that trend as well.
The Top 5 Minimally Invasive Procedures performed in 2020 by ASPS members were:
- Botulinum toxin type A (4.4 million procedures)
- Soft tissue fillers (3.4 million procedures)
- Laser skin resurfacing (997,245 procedures)
- Chemical peel (931,473 procedures)
- Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment (827,409 procedures)

These treatments help with fine lines and wrinkles, dull or tired looking skin, as well as lack of volume or fullness in the lips and cheeks.
Even three of the top five most popular surgical procedures reported by members focused on the face. They included: nose reshaping (1), eyelid surgery (2) and facelift (3).
The “Zoom effect” coupled with extra downtime, financial savings, and time away from friends and family made some of these treatment options more appealing for patients as well, Danelski says.
